LAS VEGAS – They served our country selflessly and with bravery. On Saturday, Honor Flight of Southern Nevada held a special celebration for local veterans.
92-year-old Manuel Aronstein was one of the vets in attendance who is unable to take part in the traditional flight to Washington, D.C. He served our country in WWII.
“I was with the 29th division, which was a D-Day division and I had 100 combat days,” Aronstein said.
He was one of the many service members being honored at the Welcome Home event. The vets ranged in ages from 80 to 101.
“There a lot of Veterans in Las Vegas, a heck of a lot, especially from the Air Force because the base is right here,” said Jerry Pressman, veteran of the Korean War.
The event gave vets a chance to unite and swap stories of their days of service.
“It’s nice to know that there are still people alive who are close to my age that we can still talk about our experiences,” said Aronstein.
It also gave the community the opportunity to say thank you.
“It’s that you’re appreciated for the service you were in, the time that you were in,” Pressman said.
Veterans also got to watch footage of a previous honor flight which took them through the war monuments in Washington, D.C.

Belinda Morse, executive director of Honor Flight Southern Nevada, was presented a check by DaVita Medical Group this morning to aid with the costs of sending World War II and Korean War veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C.
Honor Flight Southern Nevada is a nonprofit organization founded in June 2013, as a part of the national Honor Flight Network, created solely to honor America’s veterans for all of their sacrifices. The mission is simple: to fly our World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials that stand in their honor.
World War II and Korean War veterans who are unable to travel to Washington, D.C., with Honor Flight to see their memorials are invited to a virtual experience during a special luncheon.
According to a representative from Honor Flight Southern Nevada, some veterans cannot travel for the three-day, two-night trip because of health issues so the experience will be recreated during the Feb. 24 lunch, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There is no cost for the lunch for veterans and each veteran can bring a guest, who must pay $25. The luncheon will include a video of the memorials visited on the trips and special recognition of the veterans’ service.
“I am heartened that we get to recognize those that are unable to see the memorials in person in Washington, D.C.,” said Belinda Morse, executive director of Honor Flight Southern Nevada. “We are honored to host this event and acknowledge those who served our great nation.”
Honor Flight Southern Nevada’s next flight is scheduled for April 27-29.

On February 24, Honor Flight Southern Nevada will host an Honor Flight Experience from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will be held for the World War II and Korean War veterans who are unable to make the trip back to Washington, D.C. to visit their memorials.
The Honor Flight Experience will feature a luncheon and video tour of the memorials, followed by special presentations to the veterans, as well as an acknowledgement of the services each veteran has given to our country.

The Honor Flight Experience luncheon is provided at no cost to the veterans. Each veteran will be able to bring one or two guests depending on space available.
